A marble tombstone of a naked bearded man with a splint on his left hand, 370-360 BC, Archaeological Museum of Tinos.
A marble tombstone was included in the exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Tinos, which was found during the systematic excavation at Xomburgo, Tinos, on July 2019. The column, after the completion of its maintenance and support work on a base, organically joined the section of the tombstones of the sculpture room of the permanent exhibition of the Museum, offering its visitors the opportunity to admire one of the most beautiful works of classical sculpture in the Cyclades. The finding of the column is a result of the systematic excavation in Xomburgo, conducted by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, under the direction of the Emeritus Professor of Classical Archaeology Mrs.Nota Kourou and especially in the ancient cemetery of classical times in the place Vardalakos on the SE side of the hill of Xombourgos, a large marble tombstone was found. The column (No. at. A 587) dates to the 4th c. B.C. (370-360 B.C.) and is an excellent work of sculpture, creation probably of a Tinian sculptor, as indicated by the local marble from which it is made. The height of the column is 1,70 m. and the width 0,765 m. survives in fragments. Pictured is a naked bearded man with a splint in his left hand. He is an athlete (wrestler) accompanied by a small child figure with a bird. The theme ‘athlete with a child’ is common in classical sculpture and the presence of the child is considered to involve a particular symbolism that has received many interpretations (servant of the athlete, teen erotic partner etc.). The small size and age of the child, seem to exclude the usually erotic character attributed to similar scenes, while the presence of the bird refers to the known theme of the departing soul.
