The exhibition Designs for a Princess – The Lilian Look! will be on display at the Royal Palace of Stockholm from 29 August 2015 until 6 January 2016.

The exhibition features around 30 garments that Princess Lilian wore for official duties and family celebrations over a 30-year period.

Pure, elegant, timeless style – with a sense of humour

The exhibition includes several different times of garments – evening gowns and dresses, as well as hats and bags – divided up into six categories: weddings, family celebrations, official duties, Nobel festivities, openings and charity work, and last but not least, humour.The majority of the garments were created by the princess’ designer Elizabeth Wondrak, but there are also Swedish designs, such as pieces by Göran Alfredsson/Thalia, and French prêt-à-porter clothing.

The princess’ designer

Elizabeth Wondrak was a clothing designer with a studio in London. She began working with the future Princess Lilian in the 1950s. She designed many of the princess’ clothes for her official duties, including everything from gowns for Nobel festivities to dresses and coats. Many of Elizabeth Wondrak’s sketches have been preserved, including proposals for garments for Princess Lilian. Sketches were sent between London and Stockholm for approval or suggested alterations. Some of these sketches will also be included in the exhibition.

The exhibition will be on show in the Pillared Hall at the Royal Palace of Stockholm

The princess’ garments will be on display from 29 August 2015 until 6 January 2016, and will be on show in one of the Royal Palace of Stockholm’s state rooms, the beautiful Pillared Hall in the Bernadotte Apartments. There will also be a catalogue in magazine form available to purchase at the exhibition, featuring a wealth of images of the garments on show.

Citronne Gallery is in an 18th century building, an austere example of island architecture, on the promenade of Poros. The name of the gallery refers to Poros’ well-known lemon grove and to the novel with the same title, published in 1930 by Κosmas Politis. In addition to Politis, Poros is linked to Yiorgos Theotokas and the Nobel laureate Yiorgos Seferis, two important representa1ives of the literary generation of the 30 s, who found in the island an especially beloved summer destination and a secluded location for writing. Α determining element to Citronne’s identity derives from its geographical location. Poros is an atypical island with a transitory nature. Its central position among the Saronic islands, its close distance to Athens in relatively calm seas, its proximity and special economic and social interaction to the Peloponnesian coast across it, and its large and inviting natural harbor, make Poros, as its name suggests, a passing point. People have been moving in and out of Poros in a way unusual for other islands, whose isolated nature makes them destinations and thus more static. Part of the identity of Citronne as an art space derives from that transitory “movement” that takes place in Poros. Citronne operates only during the months of summer; to bring an intellectual stimulus outside the urban centers to a cross point; a passage – ‘”poros” – and in an oxymoron way aims to become a destination, to create a “central” reference point where people can meet, exchange ideas, be enriched through their exposure to the exhibited works. We hope to revitalize the artistic scene in the island and create an intellectual discourse during the three months of each summer.

Agnes Martin is perhaps most recognised for her evocative paintings marked out in subtle pencil lines and pale colour washes. Although restrained, her style was underpinned by her deep conviction in the emotive and expressive power of art. Martin believed that spiritual inspiration and not intellect created great work. ‘Without awareness of beauty, innocence and happiness’ Martin wrote ‘one cannot make works of art’.

Martin lived and worked in New York, becoming a key figure in the male-dominated fields of 1950s and 1960s abstraction. Then in 1967, just as her art was gaining acclaim, Martin abandoned the city and went in search of solitude and silence. For almost two years she travelled across the US and Canada before finally settling in New Mexico as Georgia O’Keeffe, Mark Rothko, DH Lawrence and Edward Hopper had done before her. Working within tightly prescribed limits she imposed on her own practice Martin was able to continue to make extraordinary, visionary paintings, for over three decades until her death in 2004.

This is the first retrospective of Martin’s work since 1994. Covering the full breadth of her practice, this extensive exhibition will reveal Martin’s early and little known experiments with different media and trace her development from biomorphic abstraction to the mesmerising grid and striped canvases that became her hallmark.

The first and largest retrospective of the late designer’s work to be presented in Europe, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty showcases McQueen’s visionary body of work. Spanning his 1992 MA graduate collection to his unfinished A/W 2010 collection, McQueen’s designs are presented with the dramatic staging and sense of spectacle synonymous with his runway shows.

The original version of Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 2011 was organised by the Costume Institute and became one of the museum’s top 10 most visited exhibitions.

The show is be the first major exhibition in the UK to present a history of Indigenous Australia through objects, celebrating the cultural strength and resilience of both Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders.
